Direction of travel matters as much as the gap. France moved from 186 (2023) to 195 (2024), a +4.8% change, while Japan went from 419 to 446, a +6.4% change. Japan is adding automation capacity at the faster rate of the two. Rising density usually reflects new robot installations outpacing manufacturing employment, rather than a shrinking workforce.
