On measured robot density โ the standard gauge of manufacturing automation โ France leads with 195 robots per 10,000 manufacturing workers against China's 166 (2024 data). That is a gap of 29 robots per 10,000 workers, or roughly 1.2ร China's level. Both figures come from IFR World Robotics via Our World in Data.
Direction of travel matters as much as the gap. China moved from 142 (2023) to 166 (2024), a +16.9% change, while France went from 186 to 195, a +4.8% change. China is therefore closing ground or extending its lead faster of the two. Rising density usually reflects new robot installations outpacing manufacturing employment, rather than a shrinking workforce.
On high-performance computing, China has 31 systems on the current TOP500 list against France's 21. Autonomous-vehicle figures shown above are modeled estimates and are excluded from the Automation Score.
