That rise of 27 was larger than Germany's 20, cutting the gap to third place from ten robots to three. Japan's 44 systems on the June 2026 TOP500 list are the most of any country after the United States (161).
Labour shortage runs through the reports Roboradar24 filed for Japan: 12 distinct stories between April and September 2026 name it. In early July several outlets covered a government plan for a homegrown AI model and 10 million AI robots by 2040, alongside a reported $6.1 billion AI and robotics plan. In the same month Mitsubishi was reported to be bringing humanoid robots into its factories as Japan runs out of workers.
Much of the deployment record is outside manufacturing. In late April and May, Japan Airlines trialled humanoid robots as ground handlers at Tokyo's Haneda airport, and in August ANA added remote robot support at airports. In September came a dedicated maintenance vehicle, reported as a "robot ambulance", for humanoids already at work, and a robot dog joined tunnel-inspection field trials. IFR's density figure covers manufacturing only, so none of this is in the number above.
The startup rounds in the record are small. The largest disclosed is Algomatic Dynamics' $32.5 million for physical AI and a robotic hand (September), followed by Atom's seed round of nearly $19 million for humanoid robots (June). Others include Donut Robotics' $1.9 million for care humanoids and O-ID's $1.2 million pre-seed for modular factory humanoids. Established companies appear as backers: Shimizu is investing in construction humanoids with Noble Machines, DIC is backing Mantis Robotics, and Qualcomm announced a Japan robotics investment programme and robotics centre in late August.
