Direction of travel matters as much as the gap. Japan moved from 419 (2023) to 446 (2024), a +6.4% change, while South Korea went from 1012 to 1220, a +20.6% change. South Korea is adding automation capacity at the faster rate of the two. Rising density usually reflects new robot installations outpacing manufacturing employment, rather than a shrinking workforce.
