On measured robot density โ the standard gauge of manufacturing automation โ Canada leads with 241 robots per 10,000 manufacturing workers against China's 166 (2024 data). That is a gap of 75 robots per 10,000 workers, or roughly 1.5ร China's level. Both figures come from IFR World Robotics via Our World in Data.
Direction of travel matters as much as the gap. Canada moved from 225 (2023) to 241 (2024), a +7.1% change, while China went from 142 to 166, a +16.9% change. China is adding automation capacity at the faster rate of the two. Rising density usually reflects new robot installations outpacing manufacturing employment, rather than a shrinking workforce.
On high-performance computing, Canada has 17 systems on the current TOP500 list against China's 31. Autonomous-vehicle figures shown above are modeled estimates and are excluded from the Automation Score.
