On measured robot density โ the standard gauge of manufacturing automation โ USA leads with 307 robots per 10,000 manufacturing workers against Italy's 237 (2024 data). That is a gap of 70 robots per 10,000 workers, or roughly 1.3ร Italy's level. Both figures come from IFR World Robotics via Our World in Data.
Direction of travel matters as much as the gap. Italy moved from 228 (2023) to 237 (2024), a +3.9% change, while USA went from 295 to 307, a +4.1% change. USA is adding automation capacity at the faster rate of the two. Rising density usually reflects new robot installations outpacing manufacturing employment, rather than a shrinking workforce.
