On measured robot density โ the standard gauge of manufacturing automation โ South Korea leads with 1220 robots per 10,000 manufacturing workers against Italy's 237 (2024 data). That is a gap of 983 robots per 10,000 workers, or roughly 5.1ร Italy's level. Both figures come from IFR World Robotics via Our World in Data.
Direction of travel matters as much as the gap. Italy moved from 228 (2023) to 237 (2024), a +3.9% change, while South Korea went from 1012 to 1220, a +20.6% change. South Korea is adding automation capacity at the faster rate of the two. Rising density usually reflects new robot installations outpacing manufacturing employment, rather than a shrinking workforce.
